Hey guys, so excited to be the new intern at the CPC. I just recently graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design where I studied Printmaking and Fibers. I moved here on a whim and have really enjoyed my summer here thus far. If I'm not at CPC I'm working at Baker Prints, which I have also been thoroughly enjoying. Hi! I’m Alex Harmel, one of the new interns at CPC. I’m currently in school at Maryland Institute College of Art where I am studying general fine art and art education. I was first introduced to printmaking at CPC and fell in love with the medium after taking an etching class here. Hi!! My name is Rachelle and I am one of the new interns here at Chicago Printmakers Collaborative. I’m very excited to be surrounded by so many artists and friendly supporters of CPC. I am a printmaker and educator living/working in Chicago, originally from the Metro-Detroit area (Yes to the Mid-west!). I’m finishing up school next semester with a Bachelors of Arts, concentration in printmaking at Northeastern Illinois University. I also volunteer with ArtReach at Lillstreet and assist in bringing art to under-resourced communities. The Apron Project: The CPC's newest collaborative, interactive event to celebrate 25 years...read on!

Hello Everyone!

This year the Chicago Printmakers Collaborative is approaching its 25th year as a community resource for all things inky, and we're marking this milestone with an interactive endeavor called "The Apron Project." We've designed this project to celebrate the artist-printmakers, students, faculty, friends and other inkslingers who have passed through our doors or who're currently running prints through our presses. 

The way it works: Snap a picture of yourself wearing your CPC apron doing something crafty, crazy, random, serious, or for its intended purpose - making prints! We've included a few pictures for you as an example... The idea is that we collect a boatload of photos from all over the world of folks sporting CPC aprons as if it's their favorite accessory. Further accessorizing is encouraged (think tools, hats, cool environments, shooting skeet, etc).

What we'll do with your sweet pics: We've created a special blog specifically for this project - ChicagoPrintmakers.tumblr.com - where we'll post what you've sent us, along with a caption (you can send us something you've written, or we can write one for you). Our plan is to eventually make a cool poster featuring everyone who's participated! We've even made a special email where you can send us all of your Apron Project info: CPCapronproject@gmail.com 

If you participate, this is what we'll need from you:

-Your CPC apron photo(s)

-Your name

-Your location (i.e. - America, New Zealand, Utah, The Bermuda Triangle, but please keep it real so we know where you're actually located! Because that's part of the fun, knowing where our CPC aprons have traveled...)

-A caption for your photo

-Optional: A few lines about your experience with the CPC (this won't be published on Tumblr, but we may use it in our 25th anniversary book.)

We'll also offer prize drawings for all of the contributors (win a new Apron or tee or print!). 

The Apron Project blog was created to visually acknowledge the PEOPLE who have made this little engine of a printshop in Chicago last this long, and to showcase the vast and colorful array of artists around the world who wear our trademark Chicago Printmakers Collaborative aprons while creating art (or really good barbeque...). 

We're really excited to get this project going, so have fun with it! We can't wait to see what you come up with!

New Work : New York - The New York Society of Etchers Exhibition @ The CPC

Greetings from the CPC!

If you're having trouble staying warm this winter, stop by the studio where the hotplate is likely to be turned way up while melting an aquatint, or the nitric acid is generating some heat while etching a piece of copper, or where some student is getting a great workout grinding stones in one of our Bikram Litho classes (omg, look at those biceps!), or where interns are re-heating the morning coffee. We got rid of our burning barrel due to fire hazards, but we do have adhesive toe warmers for anyone who is still feeling a chill.

And speaking of HEAT, we're really STOKED for our next exhibit with The New York Society of Etchers, New Work: New York, which exclusively features the printmaking medium of Intaglio (also known as Etching).  We invite all who are interested in learning about etching to attend our big fun day of intaglio demonstrations, right here at the Chicago Printmakers Collaborative:

This six-week course offers an introduction to a range of printmaking techniques with which to produce original work. Students will learn and explore many types of printmaking, including screen printing, relief, monotype, and intaglio. Works will be printed with the press and by hand. Some materials are included and a supply list will be provided on the first day.

Description:

This six week course offers an introduction to relief printmaking using wood and linoleum. Students will be directed through exercises in cutting technique and generating imagery. Prints will be created both by hand and with a press. Multiple block registration and color mixing will also be taught. Sound technique, understanding of materials and making good prints are the goals. This is a multi level course, where more advanced students will be tutored according to their abilities.

New Intern!!

Hi, I'm Anna Papadimitriou, the CPC's newest intern. I came to Chicago a year ago from Louisiana, and received my undergrad in both Public Relations and Fine Arts at LSU-Shreveport. I currently work as an assistant to Stan Klein at Firecat Projects in Bucktown, and am excited to explore my passion further for art and communications at the CPC. I love process work and anything hands-on, so I'm quite thrilled to be in such a creative environment. Maybe I'll see you one weekend during our public gallery hours, or during one of our printmaking classes! Come in and check out the work, I'd love to meet you!

Get ready for the Intervention Reception!

Next Saturday, October 5th, is the open house and reception for our current print show Intervention. We're open our regular hours from 12 to 5, with fun activities all day long.

Come by and fold paper cranes with Coach Adam at 2pm, and watch Matt Bodett's drypoint intaglio demonstration at 4.

The artist's reception is 5pm to 8pm, where you can rub elbows with artists from the show and enjoy refreshments while taking in the fabulous prints on display.

If you can't join us on October 5th, please stop by during our normal shop hours. The exhibition runs September 21- November 2, 2013.

Playing with the notion that an intervention is to come, appear, or lie between two things, this exhibition showcases eight artists whose work either formally or conceptually involves the idea of intervention in some manner. This is distinguished either in the processes in which they approach their art, in the meaning or imagery from which their work is derived, or both.

I received my Masters in Printmaking from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. I currently live in Bridgeport in an Artist Commune. Don't miss out on this exhibition which showcases a portfolio of prints made by 9 Printmaker-Musicians.  The SOUNDCHECK portfolio features an edition of 20 prints and is accompanied by a CD of 9 songs (related to the artwork & recorded by each artist).  The 12" x 12" SOUNDCHECK portfolio is packaged to resemble a classic vinyl album cover.  There are a limited number of portfolios available to the public for purchase, as well as individual proofs by each artist.

            Our exhibition featuring Musician-Printmakers, SOUNDCHECK, is up and running until August 31, 2013.  

Here's a description of the conceptual idea behind SOUNDCHECK:

•  SOUNDCHECK aims to celebrate the work of Musician-Printmakers who actively and enthusiastically express themselves in multiple art forms. To pick careers in both music and art is not exactly the most lucrative choice, and yet, these artists strive for the highest standards in both of their chosen mediums. These art forms are related. The act of recording is an act of layering, as the rhythms are often tracked first, with layers and layers of instruments and vocals resting upon one another in a complex matrix of sound. So too are prints made, with layers of visual information entered upon stone or plate or screen in order to produce a rich and penetrating image.

                SOUNDCHECK showcases a portfolio of prints made by 9 artists in an edition of 20 and is accompanied by a CD of 9 songs (related to the artwork, recorded by each artist). The 12" x 12" SOUNDCHECK portfolio is packaged to resemble a vinyl album cover. There are 10 portfolios available to the public for purchase, as well as individual proofs by each artist.
